At first glance, Mandali is a gorilla. A pet or curiosity dressed up in nice clothes for pure entertainment value.
At second glance, Mandali is an intelligent gorilla. Intelligence gleams in his simian eyes and his inscrutable expression shows clear amusement at word tricks and curiosity. But, he is still a gorilla. Ever the jokester, he pretends to be a normal gorilla around strangers, hooting and aping around. At least until its funniest to reveal his sapience, when he can elicit the strongest reaction from his victim.
Encountered by the Heidmarches in the Barrier Wall Mountains, Mandali was already awakened. They befriended one another and Mandali has traveled with them for many years. Originally, he leaned into his enormous strength and stature as a bodyguard, but in coming to Magnimar he has pursued more intellectual areas of interest.
